East Reading victorious in 1st Super 1s Festival
Super 1’s Festival @ Holyport Cricket Club
On Sunday 4th June 2023, Berkshire Cricket Foundation alongside Holyport Cricket Club ran its first Lords Taverners Super 1’s festival. Holyport (x2), Falkland and a team from our East Reading hub were joined by Buckinghamshire and Valley End Rascals from Surrey. Over 70 children and young adults represented their teams with some high-quality cricket on show all day.
The teams were split into 2 groups of 3 with each team playing 2 group games before the barbecue was fired up for a wonderful lunch. During this time, we were visited by former PM and current local MP Theresa May.
After some pictures and plenty of food, there was a third-place playoff before Valley End and the East Reading hub contested the final. Batting first, Valley End batted brilliantly and made 258 runs off their 12 overs. In reply, East Reading hub were able to keep the scoreboard ticking over to stay within touching distance. This left the last pair requiring 30 off their 4 overs. A couple of huge sixes in the final over helped the team to go ahead by 5 runs with one ball remaining. This meant a wicket for Valley End and we were heading for a bowl off. The bowler delivered a fantastic ball which was heading for the stumps, but the Reading batter was equal to the task and managed to keep it out meaning they were the overall winners.
A huge thank you must go to Holyport Cricket Club and all volunteers who helped to put on such a magnificent day as well as each participant who were outstanding in their efforts all day. Each hub will go away and continue to finesse their skills at their weekly coaching before the next festival.
