Week of Celebrations for International Women's Day
The Berkshire Cricket Foundation run 11 Chance to Shine Street projects across Reading, Maidenhead and Slough bringing cricket to hunderds of young people who traditionally face barriers to getting active. The sessions use cricket to increase aspiration, promote social cohesion and create opportunities in diverse communities and areas of deprivation.
All the great aspects of the project have been brilliantly displayed this week as the 3 girls only projects in Slough have come together with a host of events to celebrate International Women's Day. In addition to their regular games of cricket the girls had the opportunity to make and decorate cup cakes in one session at Slough and Eton School and then the girls at the Singh Sabha Sports Centre Hub were treated by a visit from a local Karate instructor who taught the girls new skills and spoke about the importance of girls feeling confident and empowered.
The week culminated with the creation of a Hand Print Tree with each of the over 80 participants from the week decorating a print of their own hand to be displayed in a fantastic collage.
The driving force behind the Girls Street Projects in Slough are Berkshire Cricket Foundation Coaches Ameena Firyad and Raabia Akhter who do an amazing job in promoting cricket not just in Slough but across the county and inspiring a new generation of girls to believe that cricket is a game for them.
